Recently, Rachel Shukertthe creator and showrunner of the adaptation of ‘The Babysitters Club‘, revealed that the Netflix canceled the attraction due to low ratings outside of North America.
The plot follows the dramas and adventures of little Kristy (Sophie Grace), Mary-Anne (Malia Baker), Claudia (Momona Tamada), Stacey (Shay Rudolph) e Dawn (Xochitl Gomez) as they face the challenges of starting their own business: a babysitting service.
Even though it received praise from critics and the public, the series did not have the same success around the world, motivating the platform to end production.
Nonetheless, Shukert did not give up on the project and told the Vulture who wants to make a film based on the novels written by Ann M. Martin.
As a declared fan of the original material, the filmmaker assured that the public also feels a desire for the continuity of the adaptation with the cast of the series.
“I think it’s going to be complicated because the girls are aging so fast and we didn’t expect the show to go beyond three seasons, precisely because of their age. But I would love to make a movie. Ann [M. Martin] always made it clear that he would not like to see the characters growing/aging because it would de-characterize the idea of the novels. These books were written over 16 years and they remained the same age throughout that period.”
Elsewhere in the interview, she lamented that her plans for a possible Season 3 were not completed.
“I really wanted to do a super special. I was coming up with ideas, like… Should they go to New York? We could see them start high school and honor everything we’ve done before. Season 2 ends with a great hook. It’s emotionally satisfying. But we had more stories to tell and I miss the girls. I loved working with them. They are extraordinary actresses and people.”
Remember the cancellation notice:
“I wanted to be a part of the universe that Ann M. Martin created since I was 7 years old, and for two seasons, I had that opportunity,” stated Shukert. “It was a dream come true. Even though I’m heartbroken that I won’t be able to return to Stoneybrook for another 20 seasons, I’m proud of our incredible series. I thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to introduce these characters to a new generation.”
Originally published as a series of just four books in 1986, ‘The Baby-Sitters Clubs‘ still remains the most successful children’s literary saga in publishing history, with over 200 works licensed in over 20 countries and over 180 million copies in print to date.
The books have already been adapted for TV, still in 1990, in a series with only 13 episodes aired by HBO. In 1995, the saga won a feature, entitled ‘The Babysitters Club‘, starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Schuyler Fisk, Bre Blair e Tricia Joe.
