In a recent interview with GQ Magazinethe acclaimed director James Cameron revealed what happened between him and an executive at Fox during a preview of ‘Avatar’even before the film hit theaters in 2009.
The director said the executive approached him with an “expression that he had been diagnosed with cancer” and asked him to cut the film’s screen time short. In response, Cameron cursed the executive, saying:
“I think this movie is going to make all the f***ing money. And when you do, it will be too late for you to love him. The time to love him is now. I’m not asking you to feel something you don’t, but understand that […] no matter how much you fawn over the movie in the future after you make all the money. […] You can’t go back and praise the movie and say, ‘look what we did together’. You will not be able to do this”.
Cameron continua: “at that moment, the executive was in shock. And I told him to get the fuck out of my office. And this is what happened”.
In another interview, this time to SlashFilmCameron said he already has a plan in mind should the long-awaited sequel ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ fail at the box office.
“The market can tell us we’re done in three months, or half done, in the sense of ‘OK, let’s complete the story in the third film and it doesn’t last forever’, if it’s not profitable… We’re in a different world than we were. when I wrote the plot. It’s a double-edged sword – the pandemic and streaming. Or, on the contrary, maybe we remind people of what it means to go to the theaters.”he said.

The first chapter of ‘Avatar’ had nothing less than 162 minutes long (that is, almost two hours and forty minutes) – and the filmmaker has already said that he wants to go further in the sequence.
“I don’t want anyone complaining about the duration, especially since they sit down and marathon [de séries] for eight hours”he commented. “I can already see that part in the reviews: ‘the agonizing three-hour movie…’. It’s like, leave me alone. I watched five hour-long episodes with my kids. This is the social paradigm that needs to change: it’s okay to get up and go to the bathroom.”
